Fire blight pruning #747158

Asked April 30, 2021, 10:06 AM EDT

I have what appears to be blight on my honey locust. In my understanding, the important steps are: Cut the limb off 6-10 inches below the diseases area, Be sure your pruning tool is sterilized between cut using a 10 percent bleach solution, But do I need to paint the cut area and if so, what product do you recommend? Did I miss anything? Thanks, Judy

Judy,

Can you please send photos?  That is not something common here.  We cannot recommend without diagnosing.

We had a cold snap in October that affected many of our trees, seeing lots of dieback.  The prolonged drought is also affecting trees.  I would prune out any dead.  Keeping tools clean is always a good idea to prevent the spread of anything. https://static.colostate.edu/client-files/csfs/pdfs/613.pdf

And proper watering is essential to recovery.  Avoid fertilizing stressed trees.  I would recommend a fall nitrogen fertilization to feed the roots.
