Tree bending after late snow #747136

Asked April 30, 2021, 6:48 AM EDT

I have a choke cherry tree in the strip between my sidewalk and street whose main trunk and large side branch were bent over by the recent April snowfall. The bend in the top of the tree is not as severe as the bend in the major side branch. There is no obvious sign that the side branch is broken or split anywhere, but it has not rebounded to its original position. I can either strap it up, pulling it to its original position by strapping it to the main trunk, or cut it off at is base. What is the best thing to do with this? It is hanging too low over the sidewalk to leave it as it is.

I'm going to ask a friend who is a consulting arborist (one of only 12 in the state) and get back to you.

Hi again,

This is what he said:

"Normal for the species. I would reduce the lateral and see what happens, but thinking that should be adequate. Eliminating the tip weight will make a big difference."

So see what that does and if you think there's still a problem, send a new pic and email.
