What is is this brown stuff? #746517

Asked April 27, 2021, 10:34 AM EDT

Last summer, I discovered this patch of brown "stuff" in my foundation landscaping, which has cypress mulch in it (although there's some bare ground showing in that area too). I am thinking it is a fungus of some kind. Do you know? Looked at closely, it seems to be an area of tightly packed "pods" with openings at the top. I got concerned about jumping worms after reading about them recently, but from what I can tell they leave behind beads of soil that look like coffee grounds -- not like this. What is this and what do I do about it? Help! Thank you.

Bird's nest fungi are common fungi on wood chips that look like miniature bird's nests or cups. Shiny peridioles are nestled inside like eggs. They will not hurt your plants.
