Looking for a xeric tree for location with little/no direct sun. No more than 10' wide #745878

Asked April 23, 2021, 1:09 PM EDT

I have a north-facing yard that I'm attempting to xeriscape. Need a nice narrow tree (15'-20' tall max./10' wide max). Ideally, an evergreen, like the Bosnian Satellite. Any ideas?

Hello, thank you for your email. The Bosnian Pine is beautiful but needs full sun. I am sending a fact sheet that includes others to consider the Rocky Mountain Juniper (although this tree likes full sun it will thrive in partial sun)  and a shrub the Mugo Pine (can grow partial shade).
Please email us if you have any further questions.

Hello,
The Bosnian Satellite also likes full sun.  Actually, most trees perfer full sunlight.   If you have partial sun available, then that will be somewhat beneficial to the plant.  Couple other partial sun options for pines/spruces are:

1.  Dwarf Alberta Spruce, 7x3 feet, but maybe too small.
2.  Pinyon Pine, 25x15 feet,  very slow growing, be careful on water since it is very drought tolerant.

Thank you for your question.

Hi would an Aspen do in partial sun? Any tall, xeric shrubs that like a shady location that might grow to about 12’?

Thank you,
Michaela

Hi Michaela,

Aspens do like partial shade and should be planted in north / east facing areas.  They grow better at higher altitudes between 6500 and 11000 feet.  Keep in mind that these trees are prone to diseases and insects.  Also, they produce suckers and may grow where you may not want them.   See below information about Aspens.

Additional small trees/shrubs for partial shade include:
1.  Dwarf Alberta Spruce, 7x3 feet, but maybe too small.
2.  Pinyon Pine, 25x15 feet,  very slow growing, be careful on water since it is very drought tolerant.
3.  Rocky Mtn Junitper, 30x15
4.  Mugo Pine (shrub), 5x10
