Hive placement #745784

Asked April 22, 2021, 8:38 PM EDT

I live in NW Montana, 15 miles from Canadian border, 4000' elevation. Get my NUCS May 1st. I need help in determining best spot to have hives as far as sun/shade. Highs in summer are at most above 85 degrees for 20 days. with winter being cold obviously. Should I place my hives in as much sun as possible year round. thanks

Expert Response

Hi Ken,

We normally prioritize locations that are good for beekeepers: vehicle access for heavy materials, away from people (especially kids and pets), workable area, etc.

Traditional advice suggests that sunny locations are better than shady locations, but I've kept plenty of healthy, productive colonies in shady locations.

I do suggest not keeping bees in a low area where moisture accumulates (like a depression) because bees can have difficulty managing the moisture.
