Heather cut back #745534

Asked April 21, 2021, 3:25 PM EDT

Do you cut back heather after the flowers turn brown with a hedger? Several of mine are very large. One year I used a hedger on One plant and has not bloomed for 2 years since. Do you just leave them alone. Thank you, Steve

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Steve.  Yes; pruning after the blooms have died is the right method.  You may have had no blooms in subsequent years because the plant was pruned too close to the ground.  You must be sure to leave a growth node, so the plant can form new growth in the next year.  Just look at the stem, and make sure you see a place where a branch may bud.  Good luck!
