Weed Id #744552

Asked April 15, 2021, 4:30 PM EDT

Can you help me to id this weed?  It has very prickly stem, growing in my yard, never seen before?

Oakland County Michigan

Expert Response

This looks like it may be motherwort.  There are many similar plants.  If you search on canr.msu.edu and search Motherwort you will find pictures and hopefully that will help you more firmly identify the plant.

Thank you for your response.  However it is not Motherwort, as the leaves, stem are very different.  Also, all along the leaves are very large spines/thorns.  Another suggested it might be European Gooseberry?

Oops, I meant to say along the "stem" are stinging thorns.

Hello again,

Sorry for the delay, Cathy is no longer available here. If you can attach a clear picture of flowers  we may be able to positively ID the plant. Otherwise, please submit pictures to MSU Plant and Pestid lab. They may ask you to send plant samples after you email them your pictures.

Thank you, again, for your patience.
