New sod in July 2020 - what do I do, now? #744539

Asked April 15, 2021, 3:22 PM EDT

We had new sod installed last summer. I saw from your calendar that I should be using pre-emergent now. Any suggestion what kind to use? Also, what other tips do you have for me in taking care of this new sod? Note that we had new sod in 2013 and weeds completely took it over in those 7 years. I don't want that to happen again! We live in South Minneapolis and our yard is small. If you have other tips on watering or in how to get rid of the lines between sod bundles that were put down - let me know!

Expert Response

An herbicide labeled "pre-emergent" for crabgrass should work for your lawn. Several companies offer this product.

Keep your new sod moist. This will help the grass put roots into the soil and keep the sod from shrinking and opening at the joints. Natural rainfall may be sufficient, but be prepared to water if there is insufficient rain. You can check the sod’s adherence to the soil by gently pulling up on it in a few places. You will feel when it has started to get roots into the soil.

If the new sod was not fertilized last fall, a balanced complete fertilizer could now be applied at a low rate. Begin mowing once the grass is tall enough. Make sure your mower blade is sharp as the new grass can be torn and pulled up if allowed to get too long and the mower blade is dull.

Thank you for the quick response! I am wondering what you mean by, “a balanced complete fertilizer could now be applied at a low rate.”

We did not fertilize in the fall. What does a “balanced complete fertilizer” mean and what does “a low rate” mean?

Balanced fertilizers contain equal amounts of the same nutrients, and the fertilizer bag will read equal numbers such as 10-10-10 or 5-5-5. Complete fertilizers contain all three primary nutrients – nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, although not necessarily in the same quantities. A complete balanced fertilizer contains the three primary nutrients in the same quantities. Fertilizer rates and applications are usually stated in the fertilizer formula’s instructions. You can find the instructions on the bag containing the fertilizer. Check the rate that is recommended, and use the least amount suggested.
