What can be done about an invasive plant? #744519

Asked April 15, 2021, 2:27 PM EDT

I noticed that an invasive plant, lesser celandine, was growing prolifically in my neighbor's yard, and that it had started spreading to my yard. I dug up every bit of it that I could find in my yard, but I know that this will not stop the problem. What do you advise that I do about it?

Digging and pulling may disrupt other plants as you disturb the soil. Believe it or not, chemical treatment is the recommended method for eradication of this plant - especially for larger areas of infestation. Choose a regular glyphosate herbicide, and use several applications during the short window of time during late winter and early spring as new growth begins. Always follow instructions on the label. Do not use on windy days or hot days.

If you want to minimize damage to nearby plants you can paint the herbicide on with a brush or temporarily cover the plants you want to keep while spot spraying. Painting will work in flower beds but you will probably need to spray the grass area and then replant it when you know the celandine is killed. You may need to do several treatments, now and next year.

If you are concerned about using a herbicide wear gloves, eye protection and clothes that can be washed after treatment.

Good luck....
