Tussock mock caterpillars #744517

Asked April 15, 2021, 2:17 PM EDT

Images of Tussock Moth Caterpillars appear in my yard patio and on my plants. Are they dangerous and how do I get rid of them safely. I have dogs that go outside. Is there an effective chemical I should use. Will they go away on their own. Thank you!

Expert Response

Howdy, Art: Thank you for your inquiry. There are two species of moth that generally emerge this time of year, either the Live Oak Tussock Moth or Eastern Tent Caterpillar. I just updated my horticulture webpage, and there are fact sheet links to the insect biology and more from that page for quick information of both species: https://counties.agrilife.org/brazoria/horticulture. The life cycle (from egg to emergence to pupation) can last up to 6 weeks. Pesticide products containing active ingredient Bt (Basillus thuringiensis) can be effective, with a caveat: the bacteria does not harm mammals and is effective against butterfly and moth larvae (caterpillars). Unfortunately, the larvae have to ingest the product for it to be effective. There are additional pyrethrin-based insecticides that are effective on contact and singly, but will not resolve the issue and I advice not to use this method as a broadcast application. Per basic biology of these insects, aerial spraying is not an effective method for control once the caterpillar/larvae reaches maturity/last stage of development. If you see masses of caterpillars on your house or sidewalk/driveway, jet spraying water by your garden hose will wash them out. Remember if using any insecticide for control, always explicitly follow application and warning information on the product label.
