Ornamental tree question about leaves #744514

Asked April 15, 2021, 2:09 PM EDT

I have a backyard ornamental tree that by mid June, always appears as if it is a dying tree. The leaves become brown and curly on the ends and very dry. The tree is in a bed (see pic) and I wanted to know how to avoid this issue this year. Is this a common problem and how can I help the tree to become more healthy and vibrant.

Expert Response

It looks like your tree may be a dogwood. Has it ever bloomed in the spring for you?

It does look stressed, given the lack of flower buds and small amount of growth put on last season.

We can't tell you exactly why, but ideally your tree is receiving a half day of sunlight. If it is not offered water when rain provides less than an 1 inch of water per week, that can also be stressful. It is also common for our native dogwoods to get a white, filmy leaf disease called powdery mildew as well as a leaf spot disease called Elsinoe. The severity of these can vary from year to year depending on the weather.

Prune out any dead wood.

A 2-4 inch (no more) mulch layer helps conserve moisture and keep roots cool. Be sure to pull it away from leaning against the trunk.
