Raised bed soil mix #744482

Asked April 15, 2021, 1:01 PM EDT

I replaced 1/2 the volume with bagged dirt. Do I need to use fertilizer like a 5_10-10 or 3-2-2 after I plant. These boxes 3x8. Is it better to disolve feet in water or sprinkle around each plant or down rows

Kevin,

Please help me understand how you prepared the raised beds.

Please answer the following questions:
- What are the beds made of? Perhaps wood; concrete blocks; or?
- How deep are the beds?
- You wrote that you "replaced 1/2 the volume with bagged dirt." What is the other half?
- Did you mix the bagged soil with the other component? Or did you just dump it in?

Yes, you will need to use fertilizer after you plant. You can use any all-purpose vegetable fertilizer, synthetic or organic, according to label directions.

Yes, you can use a soluble (dissolve-in-water product), then water individual plants or down the row. The more important factor is to ensure that the entire root system of each plant is moistened each time.

Or, you can use a granular fertilizer which is scratched into the soil -- either around the plant or down the row -- so that some of it dissolves every time you water.

Using granular fertilizer is a bit less labor-intensive than using a soluble product. But both systems work well. The choice depends upon your interest and your available time.
