Soil and irrigation for new raised beds #744471

Asked April 15, 2021, 12:24 PM EDT

We have just built 6 raised beds and are getting ready to get them going! Questions: 1) We are planning on putting Veggie Dairy Doo on the top 6-10 inches. Can a good quality topsoil be used to fill the rest underneath or would something else be better long term? 2) We have brought water out to each bed. What irrigation method do you recommend? We have been told about Orbitz bubblers which supposedly don't get clogged like drip irrigation. Your opinion needed!

Thanks for the question.

A good loamy topsoil would be more than adequate with a topping of compost.  In fact you can probably lighten up on the compost a little.

Both bubblers and drip irrigation work well.  You will probably get more uniform moisture with drip and less clogging with bubblers.  Water quality, and flow rates need to be considered for both.

I hope this helps.
