Holly tree problem #744446

Asked April 15, 2021, 11:11 AM EDT

What is happening to our holly tree. Most of the branches and trunk have these odd patterns on the bark?

New Castle County Delaware

Expert Response

Great images. This damage is caused by sapsuckers, a type of woodpecker. Some of the damage looks like it happened last year, but it does look like there is some new/fresh damage. Here is a helpful fact sheet with more information and control options: https://www.uaex.edu/publications/pdf/FSA-7561.pdf

Thank you for the information and for the ways to control the woodpecker damage.
Im glad it is not a disease and hopefully this will not kill the tree!
