What type of tree is this?

Lapeer County Michigan

Expert Response

Hi Tina, thanks for the question. This is of the genus Amelanchier (aka shadblow, shadbush, juneberry or saskatoon).  It appears to be Amelanchier arborea (juneberry), although the more detail of the flower/emerging leaves are needed to make a better ID.  The serviceberry name apparently referred to when early settlers used this plant to know that the ground had thawed so they could then bury the dead.  It provides great food for wildlife.

I hope this helps,

The flowers do look similar, but my tree seems to be taller than the article says they grow. I would estimate my tallest to be 25-30 feet tall. It also is more vertical than a wide spread bush, and less filled in. Is there another tree that had similar flowers, but would more closely match the structure of my tree? I am including more pictures.

Amelanchier arborea (aka Downy Servicebery) is more tree like and can grow to 25 feet (some sources say up to 30 ft).  Check out the  link below.
