coffee grounds and urine #744374

Asked April 14, 2021, 5:42 PM EDT

I have read about using coffee grounds and urine in the garden and yards. Are there any red flags about using this material. Is there any way to figure out how much to use. Dave

Expert Response

We don't recommend human urine in the garden because it contains harmful bacteria. Waste products from humans have to be very carefully fermented and rendered harmless, as they are in a septic or sewage system. For all home gardeners, animal feces or urine is dangerous if not processed properly. Bacteria that are contained in waste products can survive in the soil and get carried into your house on your plants. They can infect children and pets if they come in contact with the bacteria.

Using coffee grounds is great. Here is extensive info on using coffee grounds: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/techniques/coffee-grounds-composting
