Changing front lawn over to no-mow fescue #744372

Asked April 14, 2021, 5:33 PM EDT

Hello, I'm interested in changing our sloped front lawn over to no-mow fescue, but I have some questions about that: - Will the City of Minneapolis ticket me for not mowing my lawn? - Will the long fescue grasses start migrating over into my neighbor's lawn? - What is the best variety of no mow fescue to plant on a west facing mostly sunny slope to get the look of a flowing meadow grass? - Since we currently have a turf lawn, can we seed the fescue right into that or would we need to start fresh and get rid of the sod that's there? - Is it best to plant in the spring or fall? Thanks so much for your help! Looking forward to not mowing on a slope anymore :) -Mallory

Expert Response

- Will the City of Minneapolis ticket me for not mowing my lawn? You will have to contact the City of Mpls about this.

- Will the long fescue grasses start migrating over into my neighbor's lawn? Not likely - fescue is not a rhizomatous grass.

- What is the best variety of no mow fescue to plant on a west facing mostly sunny slope to get the look of a flowing meadow grass? Fine or tall fescues. Note that you will have to mow 1-2 times per year. https://extension.umn.edu/lawn-care/renovating-lawn-quality-and-sustainability

You may also want to consider a bee lawn: https://blog-yard-garden-news.extension.umn.edu/2020/04/smart-garden-2020-how-to-plan-bee-lawn.html

- Since we currently have a turf lawn, can we seed the fescue right into that or would we need to start fresh and get rid of the sod that's there? You will want to remove your current lawn and seed with fescue.

- Is it best to plant in the spring or fall? Fall is always the best time to seed. See out Lawn Care webpage and especially the Minnesota lawn care calendar: https://extension.umn.edu/lawns-and-landscapes/lawn-care
