Grass Question #744254

Asked April 14, 2021, 10:16 AM EDT

I have Inferno fescue planted in my yard, but each year a few patches of the pictured light green grass springs up in my yard. I've noticed it in other yards too. Last year I really over-seeded those areas and they seemed to go away. But this year they're bigger and spreading. Any idea what it is?

Expert Response

Unfortunately we aren't going to be able to tell you exactly what the weed is from the pictures. But now I would feel comfortable in guessing that its one of the perennial grassy weeds since it's a little early to see annual grassy weeds that size. Here is a link to a publication that can help with control of perennial grassy weeds (see page 2), https://knox.ca.uky.edu/files/weed_control_for_home_lawns.pdf. However, if you would feel more comfortable in having the weed fully identified before moving forward, we would need you to dig one up, keeping the roots intact, and bring it by the Fayette County Extension office for us to identify. Either Jamie Dockery or myself can help with that. We are open Mon-Fri, 8:00am-4:30pm. Thanks!
