Expert Response
Hello Kris,
Thank you for contacting OSU Extension Service. This is most definitely one of Oregon's native frog species, so not a foe. The species of frog you have in your pond is the Northern Red-legged Frog, which is a species of concern in Oregon due to disappearing and diminished habitat. You are lucky to have this frog in your pond given this distinction. They use water for breeding and development, then move onto land as adults. You seem to have the right kind of habitat, so if you can maintain it, then you may continue to see it use your pond and surrounding land.
You can learn more about this species by going to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's species profile HERE, and learn about its habitat needs and why it is a species of concern HERE.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Thank you again for contacting OSU Extension Service!
