fireproof tarps for wood piles? #743931
Asked April 12, 2021, 2:41 PM EDT
We live in Ashland and witnessed the fury of the Almeda Fire last September. We can't put our fire wood 30 feet from the house as our lot is too small, but we need to cover one cord of firewood this summer against wildfire. Fortunately, it will be stored on the north side of the house. What are the specifications for a tarp to cover a woodpile during fire season this year? Does it need to be soaked in fire resistant chemicals? Can you recommend a manufacturer?

Hi Karen,
Good to hear that you are taking steps to reduce your fire risk. If you are not able to move the wood into a garage or other indoor structure, a flame-resistant tarp is a good idea. There are many models that comply with the National Fire Protection Association's guidelines (NFPA 701). What's important is that the edges are pressed down so that embers can't slip underneath and get into the wood. You could use metal bars or bricks to weight down the edges, for example.
Best wishes,
Chris
