What is this on my lapin cherry tree (first year owner) #743743

Asked April 11, 2021, 4:56 PM EDT

What are these tiny moist orbs on my lapin cherry tree? This is my first year owning one. You may have to zoom in some are clear some are turning red. These are not coming from flowers.

Lampasas County Texas

Expert Response

Those are naturally occurring glands that various Prunus species (including peach, plum and cherry) produce at the base of leaves and on the leaf petioles. The location, shape and amount of these glands varies between species and varieties. They are one of many types of structures called "extrafloral nectaries" structures called that provide nectar to some types of insects.

I would be very interested in knowing how the Lapin cherry does in your area in the coming 2-3 years.
