2021 Cicadas #739275

Asked March 16, 2021, 11:00 AM EDT

We are new residents of Talbot County near Easton. I'm getting mixed information as to whether or not the Cicada X brood is in our area or not. I was planning on installing a number of understory trees and ornamental shrubs and am concerned about plant damage from the critters.

Expert Response

Hello Dugans family (I hope I have that right); Yes, we will be experiencing an emergence of brood X cicadas this coming May/June, and yes, there will be damage to thin tree branches (pencil thickness) from the female cicada when she lays eggs in grooves cut into stem bark. See: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/cicadas. You could make your tree purchases now and protect them with netting or you could wait to do your tree purchases later after the cicada 'season' is over. Good luck. Thanks, Christopher

Thank you, Christopher, for getting back to us so promptly.

Part of my question was about whether Brood X will specifically be in Talbot County. Some online information (yes, I know that everthing on the internet is not true) indicates that most of the Eastern Shore south of Kent County will not see Brood X.  Mid-Atlantic Brood Map - Cicadas.info

I am curious if that position might be congruent with the experience of the University of Maryland.

Thanks,

Jim Dugan

Hello Jim; Talk with your local garden center store staff, your county's agricultural extension service, Talbot County Master Gardener's, or any old-timer in your area, etc. to see if they know what cicadas will do where you live. I live in the piedmont and have grown up with cicada events several times. Christopher
