How to make sure sugar peas are sweet and not bitter #738873

Asked March 13, 2021, 10:30 AM EST

Last year first time planting of sugar peas in Washington Co., they grew well but were bitter in taste. How can we improve the sweetness of the sweet pea? I’m assuming it is the soil but how do I improve it?

Expert Response

High heat can affect the taste of the peas and make the pods tougher. Have you had periods of high heat during pea season last year? Dry soil or cycles of alternating wet and dry soil can also affect taste. An organic mulch between rows will help hold moisture in the soil if this is a problem for you.
Were the peas affected by a disease? A virus infection, while sometimes not very detectable, can affect the taste of the peas.

You can also try a different variety, perhaps one known for its sweetness.

Good luck with your sugar peas this year.
