Expert Response

Driving on grass is never a good idea, esp. when the grass is wet. It creates compaction which can have significant impact on the health of the soil and the vegetation growing within. This article discusses some of the impacts of soil compaction. Compaction reduces the pore space for air necessary for healthy root activity. More about soil compaction in your lawn can be found in this article on Essential Tips for a Healthy Lawn. Here is a lawn care calendar to help you plan activities to maintain a quality lawn in Minnesota.

Walking on wet spring grass can also have negative impacts as the soil is wet and compacts more easily. Avoid walking on the same path over and over. Wait until water levels have dropped when the frost comes out of the ground and you can walk on it without leaving footprints.
