large outside pots over winter #737739

How to successfully grow small evergreens in huge pots that would remain outside in the winter?

Dakota County Minnesota

Expert Response

The safest method to overwinter your evergreen is to move the evergreen tree and its container into a unheated building. The soil in the container freezes much faster than the soil in the ground so your evergreen must be hardy to at least 2 growing zones colder than your normal growing zone.

Place a few bricks under your container to elevate the drainage holes. Once the ground freezes it will not allow moisture to drain out of your pot if it sits flat on the ground.  Select the largest  winter tolerant container that you can find.
