Closure of a manure lagoon #737698

Asked March 05, 2021, 1:45 PM EST

Hi! My husband and I are looking at purchasing a 30 acre farm in Harford county. We currently keep sheep and a couple of horses. The property we’re looking at has operated as a dairy farm in the past, and raised beef cattle more recently, but includes a large manure lagoon near the barn. If we purchase the property we would want to remove/repurpose the lagoon as we would not be operating a CAFO. Are there regulations that would govern how this is removed/repurposed? Would there be any responsibilities on the part of the seller at the time of purchase? Any environmental challenges we should be aware of in living on a property with an older manure lagoon? Thanks so much for any help you can give in this matter! Regards, Sarah Hartland

Expert Response

Hi Sarah,

The best route to answer this question would be to contact the Harford Soil Conservation District:<personal data hidden>. They offer technical design, and in many cases, cost-share money for the installation of these structures.
