Asked January 18, 2021, 11:37 AM EST

Hello and happy new year! I planted a sun valley maple tree in autumn and we live in colorado. I noticed some darkening of the bark recently and was hoping to have help identifying and even treating it.

Expert Response

It's hard to diagnose with only photos to go and that oozing may be caused by several different triggers. One of the possibilities is that your Maple may be suffering from Bacterial Wetwood, a common problem that affects many different trees. Here is a fact sheet that provides details but I recommend you have a certified arborist do an on-site evaluation and recommend a management strategy.
