Cedar Tree - small holes #736690

Asked January 14, 2021, 7:46 PM EST

Hi, I noticed a group of very small holes about 10' up on a cedar tree.  The other trees close by had a few holes as well, but this one was covered.  I saw your other posts about birds, but these are quite small.  Thank you.

Yup--looks like the holes sapsuckers make. Very typical pattern. They don't have big beaks, and the holes are small. Sapsucker's holes are about 1/4 of an inch.  https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/pathogen-articles/nonpathogenic-phenomena/recognizing-sapsucke...

This is a great article.  If they don't do more damage than that, chances are the tree will be okay.   You can also wrap burlap around the trunk, or apply a sticky repellent like Tanglefoot on the bark to discourage drilling.
