What’s growing on my pittosporum #736552

Asked January 12, 2021, 6:09 PM EST

Hi there. We have a strange growth on a coupe of my plants. Major die off throughout. Any ideas and advise on treatment. It’s ok if these small plant don’t make it but they rest on a deck above a hedge and worried about further contamination.

Thank you for your question, Unfortunately, without knowing your location, we cannot tell you what diseases, insects and viruses are in your region. It would appear that it may be pit scales, described in the following Extension article on this species:  Managing Pests in Gardens: Trees and Shrubs: Pittosporum, Tobira, Victorian Box—UC IPM (ucanr.edu)

They are more closely seen and described here:  Managing Pests in Gardens: Trees and Shrubs: Invertebrates: Pit Scales—UC IPM (ucanr.edu)

I hope this is helpful.  Good luck!
