Is someone at Extension available to assist in identifying shrubs on CSU campus? #734164

Asked November 18, 2020, 11:14 PM EST

Greetings,

My name is Sean C. McCollum and I am a graduate student in the History Department at Colorado State. I am working on crafting a material culture analysis of the landscape and environment of the Andrew G. Clark Building on the CSU Campus, and I need some assistance identifying some vegetation in the surrounding area. I understand that campus has an Extension office, and I was wondering if someone would be available and willing to meet with me to see if they could help. I would like very much to craft a snapshot of the Clark building before it undergoes renovations, and having sound identification of the plant life and landscape features would benefit this project significantly. Thank you for any help you have to offer.

Hi Sean,

Contact Dr. Jim Klett: <personal data hidden>

He teaches the woody plants classes and could probably tell you every plant that surrounds Clark. He also has graduate students that assist him with plant walks.

The largish shrub looks like elderberry? And the one with orange fruit is Pyracantha.

Jim would love to talk to you and he's an Extension specialist too.

The other person would be Fred Haberecht, who is the campus landscape architect. He likely planted almost all of those things: <personal data hidden>

Alison,

Thanks SO much for the names of folks who can help, I was able to set up a appointment with Mr. Haberecht, who seems very interested in the project. Thanks also for helping me with some identification, and for answering my question so quickly! This is the second time that the Extension service has helped me out as I study Colorado's environmental history.

Best,
   Sean C. McCollum

Hi Sean,

You're very welcome. I remember you reaching out earlier about pioneer gardens and I connected you with Bill and Mary. Mary said she had such a nice time speaking with you.

Good luck on this project! Fred is great.
