What is this tall skinny deciduous tree? #733978

This tree in our neighborhood (Junction City) is very unusual to me. Maybe they usually grow in groups? I’m sure it’s common...looks like a maple relative from the leaves. Thanks!

Expert Response

From the furrowed bark and the star-like leaves and the variable leaf color, I would
say sweetgum (Liquidamber styraciflua), but the growth habit is very unusual. The real identification will be in the seed.

Yes, it’s a sweetgum! The seed pods are quite small, so I had to go right up to the tree to notice them. It’s a striking tree, I’m glad I took a closer look. Thanks!
