What type of animal would dig a 4 inch diameter hole and put rocks in it? I'm curious about the type of animal that would dig a shallow 1 to 2 inch by 4 inch hole and fill it with rocks that had to be carried from at least 6 feet away. I live at the edge of 25 miles of BLM Managed El Dorado Forest. the hole was dug in a dirt/decomposed granite pathway in the back yard.

That is interesting and curious. I've no idea, but I recommend you reach out to your local UC Cooperative Extension office.
If there are no animal tracks, it could be an insect or spider?? I hope you find an answer.
