Calhoun County 2020 EMG Basic Training Exercise -Mystery Insect #733266

Asked November 05, 2020, 12:07 PM EST

I found this insect roaming around in the garden in a place that had spinach, sweet peas, and lettuce.  He was very aware of me and didn't seem interested in my plants.  I would not call him a pest but I'm not sure what to call him as all of my searching online was unfruitful. Could you help me to determine if it is a tick, assassin bug, or another type of insect?

Expert Response

Hello,

That is either a spiny assassin bug nymph, Sinea spinipes (Reduviidae) or a spined assassin bug nymph Sinea diadema (Reduviidae).
