Does Michigan State Extension offer resources to new apple tree farmers on how to properly trim and fertilize my fruit tree? I have a honeycrisp and red delicious.
Wayne County Michigan
These earlier responses from MSU Extension Tree Fruit Educator William Shane to apple growers should get you started:
Here is a good resource on home fruit tree care, including fertilizing:
For home apple grower sprays where you need to protect against insects, and diseases I recommend this short resource from the University of Kentucky https://plantpathology.ca.uky.edu/files/ppfs-fr-t-18.pdf
They also have a good resource for pest control.
You should have a soil test to determine your pH, soil type, organic matter, and nutrient levels. The results include recommendations for fertilizing the crop you designate on the test form. During Covid, you can follow the directions on the lab site to take samples and submit to the lab: https://www.canr.msu.edu/spnl/
If you establish a commercial orchard let me know, as some resources are directed at that audience. If you have more questions, please write again.
