Powdery mildew on asters #728827

Asked October 05, 2020, 1:05 PM EDT

Hello, I believe my asters are suffering from powdery mildew. The plants are covered in a white powder and the flowers are all dead. Is this a correct diagnosis? If so, what should I do with them? Try to treat them, or just rip them out and start over next year? If I do take them out, what can I do to prevent this problem from recurring next year? They are on drip irrigation, no top watering, and full afternoon sun.

Powdery mildew usually occurs when the plant does not get enough air moving through the plant material and mildew occurs.  You can try to thin out these plants by trimming some of the branches and these cool nights may be getting cool enough to cause some moisture to linger on the leaves.  There are some spray products to apply that may mitigate this but getting more air through the plant will be the way to solve this for this fall.  Is there lawn sprinklers that are over spraying this area in addition to the drip irrigation????
