Woody knots aspen roots #727013

Asked September 26, 2020, 11:13 AM EDT

We have the above 'aspen knots' all over our yard. Our solution would be to lay large, heavy flagstone pavers to lay walking paths and a patio sitting area. We would let the grass and aspen suckers grow into an aspen grove around our house. Will this work or will the aspen suckers grow up under the flagstone and push them out of the way? Would we have a bunch of askew flagstone caused by aspen suckers trying to push up and grow? Thank you for your attention to this matter. Debra Pringle, Loveland, Colorado

Hi Debra,

This is how aspens grow--via suckers--and it would be impossible to control how or where they sucker. So while the flagstone may work for awhile, it might not always be a good solution or lay flat.

A better option if you want a smoother surface would be to use wood mulch. While this may not provide the seating you want, it would be a more "fluid" option.

The aspen knots can be dug or prune out, if you want to attempt that. But that won't prefer additional suckers.
