Peony Pests #724174

Asked September 15, 2020, 2:26 PM EDT

Something is eating the peonies.  I have tried Dipel Dust and BeetleJus.
What would you recommend?  What do you think is eating them?

Expert Response

Hello there. Sorry to hear about your peonies.

Based upon your photos, I am seeing a lot of notched/angular bites on the leaves. This is a sign of root weevils. There are several in the state, and lilac root weevil is known to like peonies.

Root weevils are active at night and they hide near the base of the plant during the day. You should do a little searching to confirm their presence. Both the larvae and the adults can be harmful to the plant.

Here is a fact sheet on root weevils and how to treat them. Be sure to follow the label on the pesticide before applying any chemical.   https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/root-weevils-5-551/

Good luck,  and let me know if you have any other questions.
