Pruning Berries/Flowers on Ligustrum Privet #721290

Asked September 05, 2020, 8:27 PM EDT

Will pruning the flowers or subsequent berries on a Ligustrum Privet restrict the hedge's growth? My goal is to grow them as tall as possible for privacy and don't want to do anything that will harm the plant or inhibit its growth. Thanks!

Expert Response

Removing flowers and berries will not impact the growth, however, Asian privet is a non-native invasive plant in this area. It's berries are carried into parks and natural areas by birds, so the shrubs displace native shrubs that our wildlife/birds need. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/privet

So if you remove the berries that would be great for the environment. And if you decide to remove the privet for some reason, we'd recommend that you  consider replacing it with a native plant.
