Black Hills Spruce Loss of New Growth #718310

Asked August 27, 2020, 5:34 PM EDT

Our Black Hill Spruce was planted last year and this year we are noticing loss of needles on the tips of the lower branches. I notice small clusters of holes in the branches (bugs or where needles were) but the rest of the branch looks like they've been chewed or lost completely. The Spruce is stressed now and is also putting off lots of cones on the top. There is some oozing at the bottom of the tree where it looks like some branches were injured.

Expert Response

Your Spruce is still settling in and the summer was wicked hot. It is probably suffering from transplant shock.
Here are a couple of diagnostic fact sheets but from the photos I don’t really see a good match. The white on the trunk is from a wound.
