Magnolia damage/illness #717921

Our mature southern magnolia has recently shown distress, with leaves yellowing and browning first on an isolated limb but now seemingly everywhere. The bark shows signs of scaling/peeling, and there are strange shiny slime patterns on parts of the trunk. Do you have any suggestion of what might be wrong, and how to help it? Thanks.

Expert Response
While the slimy trails are probably due to slugs or snails traveling up or down the trunk (and should be harmless), the bark peeling and sunken, cracked areas do not look innocuous. We recommend consulting a certified arborist to assess the tree, as this may require intervention via pruning (at a minimum) to help avoid serious issues. One of the branch bases seems to have an old canker wound (many different pathogens, often fungi, cause cankers), and this appears to have spread into the trunk at that juncture. All that can be done for cankers is to prune them out, so when they appear in trunk tissue they become much more problematic to control since you should not cut into the trunk.
