Expert Response

We cannot see the prints clearly enough to identify the animal that made them. The hole is not particularly characteristic of any wildlife or insect.  We can't tell from the photo if the bare soil is kicked out by digging or simply bare soil.  It's possible that it is an old hole or soil crack that was merely being investigated by the animal.

One way to get good foot prints, when an animal is returning to the site often, is to level the soil by hand and sprinkle with flour.  Or put down a board beside the hole and sprinkle with flour.

Thank you, I will follow your  advice. The hole was level last night and we woke to the way it is now.  I will place the flour there to see if I can get better prints.
