I was able to grow an avcado sapling from a seed. However I dont know what species it is. Not yet bearing fruit. How do I identify the exact type of avacado based on the leaves and plant stem?

You can't. You will have to wait until it blooms to tell. Different varieties bloom at different times, so you can eliminate varieties that bloom at a different time. Of course, when the fruit is harvested you will know for sure.
