Big brown bugs eating magnolia #716306

last year my friend had an approx. 12 foot Magnolia planted in her yard. Recently she wondered why it's not nearly as leafy as last year. We found a number of large (approx 1 inch) brown bugs on it. They look like stink bugs but with a long proboscis. One leaf had a cluster of miniatures of the same bugs (babies). Also found under a leaf, long brown strip of eggs. Can't find on internet what this is. Help?
