How long for alder tree to produce "cones?" #708672

Asked August 02, 2020, 9:59 PM EDT

How long does it take the alder tree to produce the pine cones. I ordered one two years ago and babied the sprig til I planted it. It is almost 8-9 ft tall already but no pine cones

Buchanan County Missouri

Expert Response

Alders can reach sexual maturity as early as 3-4 years. Male and female flowers are born on the same tree.  The male flowers are "catkins," and the female flower matures into a cone-like structure that produces the seeds.
