Asked August 01, 2020, 3:49 PM EDT

Please help us identify a weed that has taken over our yard - we have a lot of shade and the weed is easy to pull out but seems to regenerate very quickly

Dakota County Minnesota

Expert Response

Hello. Happy to help.

This is bog clearweed (Pilea fontana), a native. If left alone, it will disperse a lot of seeds.  They're easy to pull and discard but they need to pulled before they set seeds.  You just have to stay on top of them.  Unfortunately, it may take a couple of years of diligent weeding before all the remaining seeds that are currently in the soil germinate.

Here is more information about it from the Minnesota Wildflowers web site: https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/black-fruited-clearweed

I hope this information helps.
