Caterpillar identification #707618

Asked July 30, 2020, 9:39 PM EDT

Might someone please identify this pretty looking caterpillar, one neither my mother or myself, have ever seen here? It truly does look beautiful and I’m curious of its species, and if it is a Moth or Butterfly in nature. This particular specimen is about a half an inch in length. It was walking along our deck handling when I noticed it and snapped a couple pictures.

this is a caterpillar known as spiny oak slug.  Many of these caterpillars  have a bit of venom in the spines which can deliver a stinging sensation when touched.  (I only know that because i could not help myself in touching it!)  The adult is a moth- brownish but still kind of pretty.  What a cool photo!  I am wondering if you might be willing to send me your shots to be used in an educational program in the future?  If so, my address is <personal data hidden>
