Plum tree dying #706699

Asked July 28, 2020, 8:27 PM EDT

Our mature plum tree has holes boared in it by some kind of insect and sap is coming out and the tree is starting to die. 3 years ago it produced the sweetest fruit. Last year nothing. This year we planted a small plum tree near it and got a very small amount of fruit from it. Now it's dying. Should we spray Sylo insecticide? Help ASAP please. Thank you! Elizabeth Tripp

Expert Response

Thank you for your question and borers can be difficult to control. I have attached a link to Missouri extension on fruit tree borers and the peach tree borer is probably what that is attacking your plum and the article recommends August for their state so I would go ahead and apply the insecticides listed as soon as possible to try to save the tree along with hand removal if possible. https://extension2.missouri.edu/g7190 I hope this helps, Mallory Kelley
