galls on pin oak tree #706692

Asked July 28, 2020, 8:07 PM EDT

My young Pin Oak tree is covered in galls. We lost the leader last year and were able to establish another leader. We moved a bird feeder close to the tree because we heard that birds, especially woodpeckers like to eat these galls for food. It worked at first but we haven't seen a woodpecker after early spring and now we're worse off than ever. I'm afraid that we're going to lose the tree altogether! Aside from cutting down the tree and burning it, which I did for the leader, what can be done about this? We sprayed a little to kill wasps yesterday but they're back again and we don't want to harm the birds that eat the galls.

Expert Response

I am not sure what your question is. Are you wanting to get rid of the galls? Stop bird’s from eating them? Is there a wasp problem? Are the galls attached to leaves or the trunk of the tree? Galls are difficult to remove because use of chemicals must coincide with when the mites and wasps are vulnerable. An onsite inspection by a tree care professional can suggest specific treatments.
