Black tips forming on plants #705128

Asked July 25, 2020, 11:51 AM EDT

Hello! We've noticed that two different hops plants and our basil plants have started showing black tips on their leaves. All three are in separate parts of the garden. The hops plants have been treated with a mix of Bonide All Seasons Spray and Neem Oil (dang those pesky earwigs this year!) but the basil has not.

Any idea what may be going on? These are mature plants that had been thriving up until this started a few days ago.

Thank you for your inquiry.

You may have some type of fungus developing on your plants. Weather can play a major role in the development of plant diseases and our recent hot weather may be the reason you have noticed the blackening of the leaves. There is at least one fungus that can affect both hops and basil.

If the black spots are from a fungus, there are several culprits to choose from. The diagnosis, symptoms, and treatments are similar.  The spots may appear anywhere on the leaves, for example, at the center, on the edge, on the leaf or stem. A look underneath the leaves should reveal a fungal growth, like black specks or a fuzzy substance.

It's possible that the disease will progress slowly enough that you can still use your basil and hops.  It is safe to eat leaves from the basil plants, but be prepared to pull out, bag up, and throw out infected plants if they get completely affected.

Management includes using resistant varieties of basil plants or seed that are less susceptible, and possibly applying fungicides. Using watering practices that minimize leaf wetness and reducing humidity to obtain conditions unfavorable for disease development may also suppress fungus diseases.
