Evergreen die back #705044

Asked July 25, 2020, 12:25 AM EDT

I have an Austrian pine that started to die back at the crown in the new growth area. It is starting to spread to other trees. I thought maybe the drought was causing it but have been watering them quite a bit since i first noticed it. I know they had some problems in the midwest with evergreens dieing. Any thoughts on what I can do?

Expert Response

Hi, thanks for contacting the CSU Extension's Ask an Expert. Last year in mid-October (2019) we had a temperature drop of over 50 degrees, a dry winter and again in April 2020 we had 2 days of record lows which have taken a toll on our area trees. The result is that many evergreens are showing distress with brown needles, brown tops and brown streaking, see attached images. Here is an article on this exact same issue, https://arapahoe.extension.colostate.edu/2020/07/09/is-your-evergreen-brown-no-need-to-frown/ Regular watering, especially in the winter is the best way to help your evergreens recover.

If your trees are browning rapidly, it could be something other than the wild weather. If there is white resin, black spots where branches connect to the trunk or holes in the trunk, there might be insects present view the 3rd image. If that is the case you might want to contact a certified arborist for suggested treatment.
